Reasons I Love My Mother

Hi there.

My name is Chris Kelly, and I am a writer, comedian and actor that lives in New York City. But more importantly, I am the son of a pretty great mom.

She was diagnosed with cancer a couple of years ago, and in June of 2009, I decided to start compiling a list of 365 Reasons Why I Love My Mother.

I lived with my mother her last few months, and during the hard, sad times, I found this website helpful in focusing on the good and the happy.

My mom passed away on September 27th, 2009. She was a lovely person to have known and a lovely mother to have had.

Here are just 365 reasons why.

  • Reason #324:
My mom, ever the conservative mother for most of her life, admitted to me about five years ago that she loved “Sex And The City”.
For most, this wouldn’t be that big of a deal, but she was pretty buttoned-up about things like that in the past. I remember being ten years old and not being able to watch “The Simpsons”. So when she told me five years ago that she watched “Sex And The City”, she said it sort of quietly and guiltily, but then eventually got more confident about it, saying things like, “It’s fun to hear the way they talk!”. She owned it.
I got a kick out of it, and I think it’s because one main through-line memory I have of my mother - especially in her last five years - is her coming out of her shell more, loosening up, not being so worried about things. Watching “Sex And The City” is certainly the stupidest, lamest example of that, but I still loved how cute she was about it.
