Reason #333:
When I was in her 4th grade class, she did a project with us where we made life-size replicas of ourselves out of paper mache. Then, when parents came to Back-To-School night, “we” were sitting at our desks. We got a real kick out of this because we were nine, but also because it was a fun project that wasn’t just regular school work all day.
Helping thirty kids make giant replicas of themselves must definitely have been exhausting at times (to say the least), but she did it for many, many years. In fact, she did lots of little projects like this in her classroom that went above and beyond what a lot of teachers would want to do. But she did it because she knew it would be fun and memorable for us for years to come.
It was also terrifying for years to come. I remember my little sister also made a paper-mache version of herself when she was in my mom’s class and then brought “her” home to keep because she liked it so much. She stored it in a closet and occasionally one of us would stumble upon it and scream.
So thank you, mom…for the memories, the smiles, and the terror.
