Reasons I Love My Mother

Hi there.

My name is Chris Kelly, and I am a writer, comedian and actor that lives in New York City. But more importantly, I am the son of a pretty great mom.

She was diagnosed with cancer a couple of years ago, and in June of 2009, I decided to start compiling a list of 365 Reasons Why I Love My Mother.

I lived with my mother her last few months, and during the hard, sad times, I found this website helpful in focusing on the good and the happy.

My mom passed away on September 27th, 2009. She was a lovely person to have known and a lovely mother to have had.

Here are just 365 reasons why.

  • Reason #335:
She was the only one in her family to graduate from college. Which isn’t at all a slight against her brothers; they didn’t go to college and they are all wildly successful and interesting and awesome.
One of them even has a jet ski.
But she does still impress me for having gone. My mom grew up in a small town in Minnesota and her parents owned and ran a restaurant. They actually lived above it. Working in the service industry is really all my mom knew as a kid; she spent her days after school helping out by waitressing or washing dishes in the kitchen. Her brothers eventually took over the family business and she moved to California and started school (and got married to a crazy-bones, but this reason is about the college thing!).
I guess what I’m saying is this: getting a college degree wasn’t even something she was taught was important or vital to have growing up. So the effort she spent getting it because she wanted it for herself really inspires me.
