Reason #342:
I love the memory of my mom scolding a homeless man in San Francisco because he was holding a sign that said, “Why lie? I want beer!”.
My parents gave to their church and both donated and volunteered for various charities. My mom also had a soft-spot for homeless people on the street who begged for change, as well. I remember when she would come to New York, she frequently gave out money, desperately hopeful that each and everyone one of the people she came across would live to see better days. So this jokey, lazy-seeming San Francisco bum with the sign about just wanting to get drunk really rubbed her the wrong way. When she saw him, she actually made a point of telling him that it wasn’t cute or funny, and then she huffed off, all upset that he was ruining it for the others.
It made me laugh.
