Reason #343:
When you got her a card, she always read the whole thing. And I’m talking about even the paragraph of text that comes pre-written in a lot of cards. I don’t know many people that do that, including myself. But I think it’s because when she bought a card, she read the whole thing too, really making sure the message inside said what she wanted it to.
I hate buying cards for people, and at a certain point I just decided to start purposely buying the wrong card for the wrong event, so that could be the joke of it. If someone was getting married, I would get them a “Happy 1st Birthday!” card, and stupid junk like that. You know, taking the easy way out.
But not my mom. She paid attention to every single word each card said. When she would get me a card with a nice message in it, she would underline the words or phrases she wanted me to pay special attention to, and even write “Dear Chris” at the start of it. Don’t get me wrong, she’d still write a big long hand-written note too, but she was one of the few people I knew who genuinely would read and take to heart the entirety of what a card said.
I liked that.
